The need for better security when buying online is greater than ever to help protect you from fraud.    

New requirements have been coming into effect recently that require additional checks when purchasing online. We will be introducing some changes over the next few months to make your authentication options smarter and using your OnePay card online even safer. 

Two-factor authentication via SMS

What are the changes?

You may have noticed other companies and services you use mention two-factor authentication, also known as Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). Two-factor authentication means you must give two pieces of information to confirm who you are when buying online. These include: 

  • Something only you know, like a password. 
  • Something you have, like a one-time-only code generated by text message, or a trusted device that you are using. 
  • Something that is unique to you, like a finger print or your face 

That’s why you may be asked for more information when accessing apps and online services, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition.  

What do I need to do to be ready?

Three things…  

  1. If you have a smartphone, download the ‘My OnePay’ App and enable biometrics.  
  2. Check the mobile number we have is up to date (on the app or portal) or give us a call on 0113 320 1900 to add a mobile number if you didn’t provide this previously. This is the number the OTP (One Time Password) will be sent to when you buy online.  
  3. If you do not have a smartphone, register to use the OnePay Online Portal.

If we don’t have an up-to-date number for you, you will not be able to spend your money online.  

Why am I being asked for two pieces of information? 

The requirement for SCA was introduced by the second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) and these new regulations are designed to keep customer information safe, reduce fraud and make shopping online even more secure.
